Minister’s call to set up Google office and data center in Bangladesh

Post and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar urged the technology company Google to set up offices in Bangladesh, establish data centers, provide data security, emphasize on the excellence of the Bengali language and introduce mailing addresses in Bengali like English.

Google Asia Pacific Limited’s South Asia Region Government Affairs and Public Policy Manager Callie Gardner called on Wednesday (September 20) to meet at the secretariat.
The meeting was held at the minister’s office.
During the meeting, they exchanged views on issues related to bilateral interests, especially the safe use of Google, digital training, development of Bengali digital content and making Google more people-friendly.

The minister said that people have been using Google as a medium for various information. As a result of the expansion of digital connectivity in continuation of the Digital Bangladesh program announced by Sheikh Hasina in 2008, digital technology including Google has changed the lifestyle of people.

The minister stressed on Google to take necessary initiatives for more accuracy of Bengali language including more information in Bengali language, speech to text, text to speech service, mailing service, traditional translation in Bengali for 35 crore Bengali speaking people in the world including Bangladesh. He said that Google will be more profitable.

Mustafa Jabbar, requesting Google’s cooperation in training in creating digital content of textbooks in the digital transformation of education, said that the teaching program has been launched in 650 primary schools through digital content and is in the process of launching in another 1000 schools.

The minister highlighted the need for effective initiatives to remove objectionable content including propaganda and sought Google’s cooperation in this regard.

Kelly Gardner promised that Google will seriously consider any suggestions to bridge the gap in establishing Smart Bangladesh from Digital Bangladesh. He hoped for the cooperation of the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications in this regard. The minister promised all possible cooperation in this regard.
